What’s your “why?”

What inspires you to get out there? Sure, as runners, we get asked all the time why we run. But, have you ever REALLY thought about it? The vast majority of us will say that we enjoy the health benefits and yadda yadda, and I always say the same thing. But, my true “why” is personal accomplishment; setting and achieving goals. The health benefits are just a bonus! Also, races are super fun (especially Gazelle Girl ;))

I learned early on in my running career that I was not born a talented runner, as my entire childhood was spent as a competitive gymnast & cheerleader. Over the past 9 years, I’ve been researching, experimenting, finding out what works for me and what doesn’t. When you’re not born talented, it takes SO MUCH TIME – years, in fact, to build speed and endurance (and so, so much patience).

Sure, we are inspired by the Kipchoges and the Shalanes of the world… but to me, the real heroes are the ones who keep showing up, the ones who go from being a 5+ hour marathoner to a Boston qualifier, the ones who patiently work their way up in the rankings year after year.

So, what inspires you?

P.S. I have been a pacer at all 7 Gazelle Girl Half Marathons, and I am thrilled to help some of you break 2 hours next spring! Train smart and have fun! 🙂
